Tarot cards are cards with pictorial symbols, from which the Tarot deck we know today evolved. In Europe, Tarot cards are documented to have appeared as early as the 14th century in Italy and France; however, some theories suggest that the Tarot's true origins lie in ancient Egypt and spread around the world from there.

The Tarot cards themselves were probably used for "playing," but also—and very intensively—for "card reading." They consist of 78 cards: the 22 Major Arcana (= the "great secrets," corresponding to the trumps in the Tarot deck) and the 56 Minor Arcana (= "minor secrets"). The Minor Arcana are similar to today's playing cards; they are divided into four suits: swords, wands, cups, and coins (corresponding to spades, clubs, hearts, and diamonds). There are fourteen cards of each suit.
