Our top picks for construction based toys for children of all ages

Hi everyone! My name is Gabby Duchesne and I'm a graduate of the Early Childhood Care & Education program at Holland College. I work Part time at Owls Hollow and I'm able to apply my knowledge from the program to my work here at the store. Today I'm going to give you some of my suggestions of construction, building, and block based toys for children that we sell here at Owls Hollow. I hope you enjoy and let's get into it!

Tegu Blocks- ages 1-99

Tegu blocks are wooden blocks that contain a hidden magnet. They come in all kinds of different shapes, sizes, colours, and some sets even come with magnetic wheels to make fun vehicles! We have had these blocks in our playland for years now and I can definitely say they hold up very well. The possibilities are endless with this new spin on basic building blocks.  

1 2 3 Build It! Car, plane, boat- Ages 2+

This product is perfect for little ones who love to explore and build. This is a three in one building set that develops creative thinking and fine motor skills. It even comes with a play screw driver to screw pieces on and off. This toy will keep children busy for hours, as they can change it up in a flash to go along with where ever their imagination takes them. Children are using their critical thinking skills and having fun at the same time!

Squigz- Ages 3+

Squigz are fun little suckers! They can stick to any flat surface with their double sided suction cups, then you can build them up by sticking the suction cups together. A tub of them come with eight different shapes as well as colours. They are also washable and made with high grade silicone. Children will love exploring how the suction works and all of the new things they can build with Squigz. 

Hape Science Experiment Toolbox- 4+

This toolbox play set combines science and construction. It comes with 6 experiments to try out as well as a free instruction app you can download. They can also use the tools and parts it comes with to make up their own inventions. This product introduces young children to STEAM and encourages exploration and experimentation. 

Sakkaro- Ages 3+

Sakkaro is a construction toy I remember playing with when I was a child. I used this toy for hours on end, trying all of the possible building outcomes it comes with to try. It comes in 15 pieces with over 100 stacking examples to try ranging from easy to challenging. This toy is fun for all ages and will keep the whole family busy. It encourages children to follow patterns, instructions and work on their stacking abilities.
