Board Game Corner: Canvas

Board Game Corner: Canvas

My review of the game Canvas. Creatively layer your paintings to make the best painting in the show!

Players: 1-5

Playing Time: 30 Minutes

Ages: 14+

Complexity: 1.5/5

This game really intrigued me. As someone that loves to paint, I was really interested in how this would be accomplished in a game. The game has unique illustrations, and the box on it's own is so beautiful (side note: the box has a hole in the back, so that you can actually hang it on your wall! Genius!)

I thought this game was a solid 7/10 for me, I will definitely play it again. I like that the game can have different objectives, so each game isn't exactly the same. It was fun to present a completed painting, sometimes they looked a little funny, sometimes they were beautiful, and sometimes they just didn't make sense. Keep in mind, like real life, not all paintings are perfect.

The goal of the game is to get as many ribbons as possible. Ribbons get you points and the artist with the most points wins!

The game starts by each player choosing their canvas, each canvas is uniquely coloured, and it serves as the background for the illustrations you choose. The game has different objectives. For example, each art card has different elements. If the "composition" objective is chosen, you will need to finish your painting with all 5 coloured elements. The more paintings you have that follow the objectives, the more ribbons you will receive.

ObjectivesArt Cards

On your turn you either choose an art card to put in your hand OR you finish a painting. The first few rounds you will just be collecting cards. When you think you've got a good combination of 3 art cards, you slide them into your canvas, present your art, and take however many ribbons you've been awarded. The game continues on until everyone has completed 3 paintings.

Game EndObjective Options

Tip: You really want to choose art cards carefully, don't just aim for one objective, try to get multiple, so that you can really score big.

This game is stocked heavy with symbols so it can get a little busy at times; I think that adds to the complexity of the game. If you want a more simple gameplay, just choose less objectives.

Overall, my friends and I all liked the game and we will definitely play it again!
